Access Connecticut seeks to restore the right of every adopted adult citizen in Connecticut to obtain a copy of his or her original, true birth certificate and end discrimination against adoptees.

As part of National Adoption Awareness Month, we would like to share the experience of Diane M. Hook of Middlebury, Conn., who relinquished her son to adoption in 1961. She tells how that happened – what she was promised – and how it all impacted her throughout her life.

Ms. Hook’s experience was not unique. Birth mothers at the time were not promised confidentiality and were advised that their identity could be obtained by their adult offspring but would not be available to the public.
